Chief Architect for Algorithmic Warfare
U.S. Army Futures Command (AFC), Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2)
Dr. Jean Vettel currently serves as the Chief Architect for Algorithmic Warfare in support of the Army vision for Next Generation Command and Control. Prior to her career in the Army, Dr V earned her Bachelors degree from Carnegie Mellon (PA) in 2000, served as a lab manager at Washington University in St. Louis (MO), and a PhD in Neuroscience from Brown University (RI) in 2009, funded by a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and a Department of Defense (DoD) SMART fellowship. For the first decade of her Army career, Dr V led a cross-organization, multidisciplinary science team at the Army Research Laboratory, investigating how physiological signals can be used to enhance human-machine teaming. She was recruited to co-led Task Force Ignite, a team directly advocated by the inaugural Commanding General for Army Futures Command (AFC) to unify our expertise across threat, operational, and technical communities and identify “what could be” for future warfighting capabilities. Dr V then served as Chief Scientist for the Futures and Concepts Center, providing Science and Technology advice to the 3-star director and the deputy commanding general for AFC, before her current role where she informs the architecture and data approaches within the NGC2 Product Owner. Throughout her career, Dr V achieved many accolades, including competitive selection for National Academy of Engineering outstanding engineers under 45, AFC Distinguished Member of the Workforce, and Superior and Meritorious Civilian Service medals. Dr V has over 100 publications and reports, including peer-reviewed articles in Nature, Nature Physics, Science Advances, Proceedings of the IEEE, NeuroImage, PLOS Computational Biology, etc, and she has done extensive VIP briefs, media interviews, and invited panels about the Army’s innovative efforts to advance our National Security.
