As a principal applied cybersecurity engineer at MITRE, Aaron Lippold translates evolving governmental and industry risk into technology roadmaps and security programs. He originated and is the chief engineer of the MITRE Security Automation Framework (SAF), which integrates security into software development and operations (DevSecOps) across the government, commercial, and open-source security community. For more than 20 years, Lippold has supported the shape, direction, and technology of DevSecOps initiatives for agencies across the US military, intelligence community and federal government. As a leader in the open-source community, Lippold has assisted and designed multiple security and automation projects, including InSpec, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Jenkins, NIST OSCAL and SCAP, Docker, and Bastille Linux. He was one of the team-leads and contributors for the development of the NIST SP-800-190 Application Container Security Guide and continues to support the NIST OSCAL project. He helped to define the concepts of DevOps and CI/CD patterns and contributed to the Agile and Extreme Programming communities. Prior to joining MITRE, Lippold led research and design for defense cyber solutions at the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation (VTARC), a startup funded by Virginia Tech to support technology transfer from the university to the defense, intelligence and government communities. He was also a computer scientist and senior technical advisor with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) on issues of security, information assurance and open technology, driving such landmark projects as Forge.mil and MilCloud. In his early years, as a research programmer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Lippold helped to build three of the world's “Top 500” supercomputers. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a dual bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics.
