Humans are natural problem solvers. It is in our nature to try to make things better, faster and cheaper. Unfortunately we sometimes attempt to solve problems without having all of the needed information, causing wasted time, resources and effort. Many different approaches have been used over the years with varying degrees of effectiveness. We have used approaches such as the 8D, 7 Step, 5 Principles and Six Sigma, all of which all have their pros and cons and have many similarities. This presentation will cover why a structured approach, with effective training and the leadership to use this structure consistently is the most important.

The Gemba Walk: Lean Concepts to Coach and Mentor Leadership
One of the most important tools that has stood the test of time (if done properly) is the Gemba Walk. Gemba is a Japanese term that simply means “the actual place” and has been loosely translated to mean “where the value is created” in manufacturing. Gemba Walks became a regular facet of the Lean Production System in the mid-1900’s. Their purpose was to have Leadership members get out to the production floor where the value was being created and observe the process (not the people!).
