1.5 Kw Blue Laser and Scanner System for Rapid Manufacturing of Batteries, Fuel Cells and E-Mobility
Welding of copper, aluminum or thin stainless steel can be accomplished at high speeds with no porosity and no defects. NUBURU’s 1.5-kW blue laser system, when integrated with a scanner can deliver a 450-micron spot size over a 11 x 11 cm area. This spot size / power combination is ideal for welding all of the connections in a battery pack as well as the internal foil structure of a battery. It is equally ideal for welding copper and dissimilar metals into all e-mobility applications, such as but not limited to hairpins, power electronics, and sensors. Tests with thin stainless-steel fuel cell plates yielded similar results, very low-profile welds that have no porosity and are ideal for a hermetic seal and stacking. This paper will summarize the laser/scanner key performances and their impact into welding as well as welding results in these two important applications: battery and e-mobility.

Kilowatt Blue Laser Sources for Novel Material Processing Solutions
The laser-based copper processing gained significance in the last years due to the increasing demand for the interconnection of highly conductive connectors in the field of electric vehicles. In contrast to laser sources emitting in the near-infrared wavelength range of 1µm, blue laser sources emitting at 450nm can increase the process efficiency of up to factor 20 for the melting of copper. This high absorption level allows new process approaches, which were formerly however restricted by the conventionally low power level of blue laser system. With the availability of a kilowatt laser system with 450 nm wavelength, a major step has been achieved to reach industrial relevant power levels. In this contribution, we will review the latest developments regarding the blue laser system technology and give an overview regarding welding applications on copper and dissimilar material combinations.
