Methods for Efficiently Managing Shifting Bottlenecks and Proactively Planning for Capacity in High-Variety, Make-to-order Production
In high-variety, make-to-order production systems of job shops, bottlenecks keep shifting due to the joint effect of high known variation in process requirements of jobs and stipulated job due dates. These bottlenecks adversely affect throughput, on-time delivery, work in process and production lead times of jobs. However, job shop managers are unable to predict the occurrence of shifting bottlenecks for performing proactive capacity planning as much as possible. If some temporary bottlenecks cannot be fully mitigated due to limited scope of capacity planning, then the absence of bottleneck prediction makes it difficult to find right job release times for controlling production lead times of jobs and work in process. The purpose of this talk is to demonstrate how effectively powerful scheduling solutions help with prediction of shifting bottlenecks, proactive capacity planning and determination of optimal job release times (for the best production management).
