Reality Doesn't Count, It's The Perception Of Risk That Matters

Accurately communicating risk is one of the most important functions of a safety professional. How often have you tried to talk a worker into using personal protective equipment when they underestimate the risk, or alternately have someone very concerned about a condition which has very low exposure and risk? This can be the most frustrating part of the profession. Spending time and resources on something with very low risk, while not putting resources into high risk conditions is inefficient and frustrating. We will review the “outrage” model of risk perception and use it to navigate the process of communicating risk, and getting safe performance.
