Responding to escalated behaviors with restraint or seclusion can have lasting effects on students. Reducing the use of these practices requires a district-wide commitment to systemic change. In the Auburn School District in Washington State, Patrick Mulick has led a comprehensive shift away from restraint and seclusion through multidisciplinary collaboration, improved systems, tiered behavior supports, and effective use of Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). One significant step in this transformation was the adoption of Safety-Care, a training program focused on preventing and responding to challenging behaviors with dignity and respect. Patrick will be joined by Erin Mayberry from Quality Behavior Solutions to briefly discuss the features of Safety-care and how it equips staff to prevent and support escalated behaviors.
