Building the Bench: A Statewide Special Education Administrator Development Program (Room 550 A/B)

What does it take to build a deep bench of prospective and current administrators ready to meet the ever-changing challenges in the field of special education? New Hampshire has been exploring this question for 20+ years. What began as a small home grown 6-day academy for new special education directors in 2006, is now a multifaceted and coordinated initiative that provides new and aspiring administrators with individualized options to develop skills and knowledge along with multiple pathways to obtain appropriate licensing. This has evolved over the years through the on-going efforts to collaborate among practitioners in the field, our state professional association, higher ed. and the New Hampshire Department of Education. NH has taken the CASE Administrator Standards along with statewide expectations and woven them into the fabric of our work in the field. Although New Hampshire is a small state which allows us to innovate at the statewide level, this type of program can be replicated in other states, county-wide systems or internally within large school districts. Come hear about what we’ve done, what we’ve learned, and how you can build your bench.
