From Avoidance to Attendance: A Collaborative Approach to School Refusal (Room 554 A/B)

School refusal is a complex, function‑based behavior that can appear at any grade level and often requires a coordinated, multi‑tiered response. This session offers a practical, evidence‑based framework that moves from early data collection and functional assessment to selecting tiered interventions, ensuring IDEA compliance, and planning a supportive, gradual re‑entry. Grounded in Forsyth County Schools’ Attendance and School Refusal Action Plan, the presentation highlights real teacher experiences and stories from special education staff who have successfully helped students return to school. Participants will explore strategies for engaging resistant students, partnering with families, and strengthening collaboration across support teams. We will also address the unique legal responsibilities schools hold when a student with a disability refuses to attend. Participants will leave with concrete tools, clear processes, and the confidence to effectively identify and respond to school refusal, helping students rebuild consistent, sustainable attendance.
