Boys are 2-3x as likely to be identified with ADHD and experience difficulty within the school setting, with boys of color facing even greater challenges including disproportionate discipline and lower academic outcomes. How do we support our students, specifically boys, in a way that builds relationships and trust while producing positive student outcomes? This presentation addresses the need for strategic capacity building regarding the intersection of culturally responsive teaching, special education, and the specific needs of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Designed specifically for special education administrators who support systems of change, this session equips leaders with the framework and tools to: 1) analyze equity data to identify disparities in discipline, academic outcomes, and family engagement for boys with ADHD across racial and cultural groups, 2) build teacher capacity through targeted professional development and coaching that integrate culturally responsive practices with evidence-based ADHD interventions, 3) examine bias, and create alternatives to exclusionary consequences, 4) address the IEP processes to ensure individualized education programs affirm both disability and cultural identity through strength-based language and authentic family partnerships, and 5) monitor implementation and outcomes using specific metrics to track progress and adjust practices based on data. Participants will leave with action planning resources for implementation within their schools and districts.
