Learn from litigation instead of fearing it. When disputes occur, they offer valuable insight into system weaknesses which districts can use as a powerful learning tool. Drawing on lessons from due process hearings, this session will show how districts can strengthen practices, improve staff training, and better serve students with disabilities. This session will be led by David Bateman & Angie Balsley, whose combined decades of experience include: classroom teacher, district administrator, college professor, hearing officer, mediator, state complaint investigator, and dispute resolution expert. In this engaging session, participants will examine common triggers for litigation and explore where disputes actually begin and how district leaders can prevent problems before they escalate into formal complaints or due process hearings. Participants will leave with practical strategies, administrative checklists, and key questions they can immediately use to strengthen special education practices and reduce the likelihood of disputes.
