Innovating for Success: Cutting Edge Practices
Districts are increasingly navigating complex behavioral and social-emotional needs that place pressure on teams to consider more restrictive placements. However, without a structured decision-making model, more restrictive placements can either become an overused default and often fail to produce growth and progress in students. This session presents a district-developed intensive support continuum designed to (1) protect students’ access to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and (2) intentionally build the behavioral capacity of school staff. Participants will explore a four-phase framework that integrates BCBA consultation, data monitoring cycles, fidelity checks, structured administrative checkpoints, and planned fade-out procedures. Rather than functioning as permanent adult shadow support, an intensive RBT support model is designed as a temporary, data-driven intervention that includes coaching, skill transfer to paraprofessionals and teachers, and systematic capacity building. Participants will examine how this approach has reduced change-of-placement considerations, strengthened implementation of behavior intervention plans, reduced incidents of seclusions and restraints, and increased staff confidence in supporting students with high behavioral and social-emotional needs. Attendees will leave with a replicable structure for preserving LRE while strengthening building-level expertise.
