Instructional Excellence: Achieving Success
Special educators are often expected to implement the Science of Reading but rarely receive professional learning that moves beyond theory to sustained classroom practice. In Pulaski County Special School District, the Structured Literacy in Action model transformed how interventionists deliver reading instruction by combining evidence-based structured literacy practices with collaborative learning, practical tools, and immediate classroom application. Co-presented with a district lead interventionist, this session highlights how targeted professional learning strengthened instruction for students with intensive reading needs. Participants will explore key components of the model, including explicit instruction across the five components of reading, hands-on application of strategies, collaborative planning routines, and ongoing support through professional learning communities. Interactive Activity: Participants will also engage in a Structured Literacy Implementation Planning Lab, using a guided template to identify opportunities to integrate these strategies into existing professional learning systems and begin drafting a practical blueprint for implementation across intervention teams.
