Colonel Lawrence K. "Sonny" Hussey graduated from California State University Sacramento in 1991 and was commissioned in 1993. His first assignment was 1/7 as an infantry officer. He was augmented in 1997 as an intelligence officer and was re-assigned back to 1/7 as the Intelligence Officer. Captain Hussey finished his tour at 1/7 as commander of Headquarters and Service Company in May 1999.
He attended Command and Control Systems Course and graduated in May 2000. From there, he was assigned to the Joint Intelligence Center at US Central Command as a Watch Officer then Target Development Officer, participating in Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and ENDURING FREEDOM and Counter-Terrorism Targeting for Yemen and the Horn of Africa. In Jan 2003, Captain Hussey deployed to Qatar at CENTCOM's Forward Headquarters for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I. Upon returning, he reported as the Intelligence Officer for 7th Marine Regiment. While in that billet, he deployed to Al Asad, Al Anbar, Iraq in support of OIF from Feb 2004 to Mar 2005 and again from Jan to Jun 2006, when he returned to execute orders to Newport RI.
In Newport, Major Hussey graduated with distinction from the College of Naval Command and Staff in Jun 2007. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Joint Special Operations Command where he served as a Plans Officer and Future Operations Branch Chief in the Intelligence Directorate. He participated in several TAD deployments in support of Joint Special Ops Task Forces and was promoted to LtCol in Sep 2009. In May 2010, LtCol Hussey assumed command of 2d Reconnaissance Battalion and deployed from Nov 2010 to Jun 2011 to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. He relinquished command in Dec 2011 and served as the Executive Officer for 2d Marine Regiment until reporting as a student to the Marine Corps War College in Jul 2012.
In Jun 2013, LtCol Hussey graduated from MCWAR and was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps Intelligence Department as the Chief of Intelligence Operations Division and the Intelligence Occupational Field Manager until Jun 2015. Following the Pentagon, he reported to Camp Pendleton CA as the Intelligence Officer for 1st Marine Division from 2015 to 2017 and was promoted to Colonel on 1 Sep 2016. From Aug 2017 to Jun 2018, he deployed as the Deputy Director of Intelligence for the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation INHERENT RESOLVE in Camp Arifjan Kuwait. Col Hussey then reported to Quantico in Jul 2018 as the commander of the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity until June 2020.
In July 2020, Col Hussey became the AC/S G2, Senior Intelligence Officer for Marine Corps Forces / Fleet Marine Forces Pacific in Hawaii. As of July 2024, he assumed the duties as the AC/S G39 and G6 for MARFORPAC. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with gold star, Bronze Star with gold star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon with gold star. Colonel Hussey is married and has three children.
