Jessie Wheeler brings 14 years of experience in Virginia public schools, where she has served as a secondary English teacher, reading specialist, interventionist, and department chairperson. Throughout her career, she has actively contributed to school and district level leadership teams and has participated in state and national committees. In October 2023, Jessie began her current role as Department Teacher and Education Liaison at the Pediatric and Adolescent Inpatient Mental Health Unit at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, supporting patients ages 9–17. In this position, she collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of medical providers, nurses, therapists, and social workers to address the educational needs of students experiencing significant stressors, atypical development, emerging mental health concerns, or substance use disorders. Jessie works closely with patients and their families to identify educational priorities, review and analyze scholastic records, and support the inpatient treatment team in developing recommendations for students across life settings, including school reintegration. She holds a Master’s in Education as a Reading Specialist and a Master’s in Education in Individualized Studies from Regent University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in English from Christopher Newport University. Jessie maintains a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in English (6–12) and Reading Specialist (K–12).
