Joanne has served students with disabilities and their families as a teacher, Director of Special Education, and Building Principal. She has contributed to the field as a teacher educator at The George Washington University and Drexel Univerisity and served the Director of the IDEA Partnership at the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE). For 16 years, she coalesced over 50 national organizations around common interests and shared work. The Partnership pioneered Communities of Practice (CoP) in Education and helped decision makers, practitioners, and families learn and act together. Modeling what they learned in working together, the IDEA Partner organizations co-created Leading by Convening, a stakeholder-developed blueprint for authentic engagement. Joanne has authored book chapters, articles, manuals, and newsletters. She has led over 200 workshops crossing the boundaries of agency, discipline, and role in support of shared work. Although leaving full-time work, Joanne continues to serve as a contractor with NASDSE and supports states in working across groups. She is an active leader in the National Coordinating Committee on School Health and Safety (NCCSHS) and serves on the Advisory Board of several national content centers and federally supported parent leadership investments. Returning to her native Pennsylvania, she continues to focus on the human side of local challenges and promotes inclusivity in her work and life.
